Learning to Paint
I watched my daughter draw a few squiggly lines and put a couple of yellow/brown blobs in the middle and there was a giraffe. I struggled to understand. The lines and the misplaced coloured blobs could never have come out of my mind, yet it worked. Can you learn to paint or is it a gift with which you are born? I’d always thought it was a gift, my drawings forever looked childlike.
To put it to the test I signed up for a beginners Art Class. The word ‘beginner’ is a misnomer. I turned up to the first class with nothing, absolutely nothing. The other beginners turned up with well used brushes, paints, pads, sponges, pencils, jars and boards. Some even had easels (and knew the teacher well). I borrowed the necessary. The journey began.
Innate skill or learned?
In terms of learning to paint there seems to be a large amount of luck. Sometimes a painting works and sometimes it doesn't. The art class teacher is able to produce a worthy painting every time, she, I believe has natural talent, as many do – the rest of us learn to paint by collecting techniques and ideas. I suspect a great artist has both in-born talent and a well-practiced technique.

Painting and Thoughts (PDF). The aim of this book is to present a real beginners journey of learning to paint alongside 'life' thoughts that occupy my mind. I’ve written to myself; the hope is that by committing these thoughts to paper it will give my mind rest. We’ll see. The intention is not really to share them as such, nor claim anything to their value – they’re simply thoughts.
